The First Greek Orthodox School in Sydney, was established in 1983 under the auspices of the St.Spyridon Parish in Kingsford. After nearly 50 years of service, the school has achieved excellent standards in all areas of education, and it can be said that, it continues to live up to its motto – “Forever Excelling.”
In 1991, the first Serbian student was enrolled at St.Spyridon College. The floodgates opened, and in the ensuing years, scores of our kin have enrolled. In the spirit of true Orthodox fraternity and exemplary pastoral care, the College took the bold step in 1997, of introducing Serbian Language at the High School as a core subject. Many Serbian students have been school captains, prefects, duxes and also first place achievers in HSC Serbian at this and the other two Greek Colleges is Sydney.
As we move toward opening St.Sava College next year, we hope to welcome children from our sister Orthodox Churches, and to offer them and their families the “hospitality” our community has experienced in their schools.
Parish priest of the Greek Orthodox Church in Kingsford, Fr. Steven Scoutas, is one of the founders of St.Spyridon College. We had the great pleasure and joy of welcoming him to the St.Sava College building site recently. Fr.Steven was overwhelmed at the size of the property and of the scale of works. He remarked that our church is blessed that Bishop Siluan is a young and dedicated leader who will continue to guide the development of the College over the coming decades. His words of encouragement were a great blessing to us all. A portion of his address is attached here.
A word of sincere thanks to those who are responding to our continuing appeal for donations and assistance. Given the fact that the traditional avenues for raising funds through organised events will not be possible for the foreseeable future, we rely on the goodwill of our community and supporters to get us over the finish line. It is hard work, and it is obvious that there are those who simply cannot, and therefore should not donate during this time of uncertainty. However, we continue to appeal to those of you who can. No donation is too small. God Bless you all!
